    The Accucraft Plantation 0-4-2 is a updated version of our Ruby design! This generic plantation engine has features that were common on all late 19th century Plantation locos. They were exported all over the world, and used mainly on Sugar Plantations in the south and also in Hawaii. Most of the American locomotive manufacturers built Plantation loco s in 3 foot gauge, and ours follows Baldwins basic designs. The name IUKI in Hawaiian stands for Judy and it joins Accucrafts other small generic locomotive names Ruby - Ida - Mimi.

    The Pennsylvania Railroad s 4-4-4-4 Class T1 passenger locomotives were their last-built steam locomotives. They were not articulated, but were Duplex drive and had poppet valves. The first two, #6110 and #6111, were built by Baldwin in 1942. These locomotives were considered successful and could pull 16 cars at 100 MPH. They were also technically advanced and more efficient than previous designs. Later, 50 more of these were built in 1945-46 for a total of 52. Locomotives #5500 to #5524 were built by the Pennsylvania Railroad s Juniata Shops and #5525 to #5549 were built by Baldwin. The large tenders carried 38.6 tons of coal, 19,200 gallons of water and could travel between Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Chicago, Illinois with only one stop. Wheel slip problems were later found to be controllable by more experienced engineers. The streamline design by Raymond Lowey was in later years the inspiration for the Baldwin Lima Shark Nose diesels. JH

    The Forney design was originally developed for use on the
    elevated railroads in New York and Chicago, it had a short
    wheel base to take the sharp curves with a truck under the
    tank to increase stability. The result was a very versatile
    locomotive design, and although soon replaced by electric
    traction on the elevated suburban lines it rapidly proved
    popular with other railroads.
    In particular the narrow gauge 3ft lines on Plantations in
    the south and 2ft lines in Maine took to the Forney, improving it still further with the addition of an extra pony truck at
    the front. Our model is based on this final incarnation of the
    design.
    The model is large enough for the driver to sit on the rear
    tank when driving. Special care has been taken to get the
    controls as close as possible to full size practice, the driving experience should be as good as the real thing!
    This is a large powerful locomotive and a pleasure to drive,
    invoking the atmosphere of a bygone era in narrow gauge
    short line railroading.

    The New York Central Hudsons were some of the most
    iconic east coast locos produced in the 20th Century and their
    loss has been widely mourned since the last example was
    scrapped. The Hudson 4-6-4 evolved from the Pacific wheel
    arrangement, the additional trailing wheel set giving room for
    a bigger firebox and the fitting of a booster to the rear truck
    to improve the starting of heavy trains. Although locos of the
    4-6-4 wheel arrangement already existed (being known as a
    Baltic in Europe), the NYC examples came to be known as
    Hudsons following a conversation between the NYC s motive
    power superintendent, Paul Keifer, and the railroad s president,
    Pat Crowley.
    In all the New York Central Hudsons numbered 275, built in
    Classes J-1 and J-2 from the late 1920 s and J-3 during the late
    30s. Streamlined variants of each class duly appeared and
    the last ten J-3a s, including our #5454, carried bodywork created
    by industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss. In 1938 Dreyfuss
    was commissioned by the railroad to design streamlined train
    sets in Art Deco style, with the locomotives and passenger
    cars painted in blues and grays. The streamliners made their
    initial runs in June, 1938 and were probably the most famous
    American passenger trains of all time, the Empire State
    Express (New York - Buffalo) and the 20th Century Limited
    (New York - Chicago). The NYC made full use of the design s
    radical looks in its publicity and many posters from that era
    feature the J-3a s; a member of the class also represented the
    NYC at the 1939 World s Fair alongside streamlined engines
    from the Pennsylvania RR and the LMSR in Great Britain.
    The Achilles heel of the class was a lack of sure-footedness
    and they were gradually supplanted by NYC Mowhawk 2-8-
    4 s and finally the Niagara 4-8-4 s on the heaviest trains.
    Ultimately the New York Central dieselized in the 1950 s and
    all the Hudson s had been withdrawn by 1956, none being
    preserved.

    The Locomotive
    Ruby is a freelance, gauge 1, 1:20.3 scale, live steam locomotive based on Baldwin practice. It has been designed to be both simple to operate and sophisticated enough to satisfy more experienced modelers. With proper car, Ruby should give years of service in the garden.

    Operating a live-steam locomotive is much different from running an electrically powered engine. It is a more hands-on, interactive experience. The locomotive must be periodically fueled, oiled, and watered. As supplied, Ruby is manually controlled, which means that you must actually drive the locomotive using the controls in the cab, just as you would a full-size engine.

    The performance of the engine is also unlike electric locomotives. Ruby should pull up to half a dozen standard-size freight cars on good, level track, which is about the same capacity as a full size locomotive of this configuration. Grades and sharp curves will diminish its capability. A good engineer will learn the engine's characteristics and idiosyncrasies overtime, to get the best performance and longest duration from it.

    The Kit
    This pre-painted kit can be assembled with a minimum of tools in just a few hours. Follow the instructions carefully and you should have no trouble.

    Your kit is packed in four styrofoam trays. On the top of each box us a list of the parts contained inside. Refer the part numbers to the parts list. Each part of group of parts is packed in its own plastic bag. Familiarize yourself with the parts, but leave them in their respective bags until you are ready to use them.

    Follow the instruction sequentially, referring to the drawings as you go for clarification. Make sure you understand each step before proceeding. The part number is in parenthesis after each part name.
